Salty Liquorice in Unlikely Places

Slowly but surely it is invading our shores. No longer do I have to resort to internet ordering: salty liquorice can now be picked up at Waterloo Station (the 'tripple salt' coins aren't quite as salty, but just right for me. The 'zout' diamonds are, however, 'zoet'!)

And that's not all. In my old alma mater, a sweet shop has appeared on the High Street, and they have salty liquorice. Even sugar free ones!

I'll have to return when the tourist hordes are gone.

a wall of licorice in Albuquerque, NM (mail-order available!)

If you're ever in Albuquerque, New Mexico (U.S.A.) in need of a black licorice fix, be sure to pay a visit to The Candy Lady.

Their website advertises a "wall of black licorice" and the store does not disappoint. Of course, less than half of this wall (below) is dedicated to SALTY black licorice but I was impressed to find such variety in the southwest U.S.

Here is a closer look at the salt licorice selection:

the salty stuff

If you view this photo on Flickr, you will see notes on each type when you mouse over them.

My favorites are at the far ends of the second shelf. On the left, almost cut off in this picture, are deliciously chewy gumball-sized candies with a waxy licorice shell and firm, salty innards. And on the right, the "Heksehyl" which are sugar-covered tubes of licorice with a soft brown/salty filling.

The Candy Lady is located on the outskirts of Albuquerque's historic (and heavily touristed) Old Town. It is definitely worth a visit for any licorice lover in the area but they will do mail-order delivery for those further afield. The cost (in June '09) was $9.95/lb., plus shipping and handling.

Here is the licorice section of the printed menu they gave me, tho it doesn't seem that they have everything properly listed. If you do order, I'd say just ask for a good variety of the salty stuff.

Generally I travel light, but my backpack was 2 lbs heavier when I left here.
